"Hey Rach." He greeted at her locker.
When she looked up at him, her cheeks turning a light shade of pink, she mumbled. “I gotta go.”
"Wait!" He stopped her before she could turn around. "I’m sorry about Quinn."
She spoke so quietly he had to strain his ears to hear her. “I’m guessing you heard about that.”
“Yeah,” He nodded. “I’m sorry. You didn’t deserve that. She was just being a bitch because she didn’t win that damn crown.”
She finally looked directly into his eyes, “you just called your girlfriend that.”
“She’s not my girlfriend anymore.”
To say that she was shocked was an understatement. She had to keep her jaw from falling to the floor. But then her eyes grew sad. “I’m sorry, Finn.” And oh God, it killed her to say this. “I know she made you.. happy.”
“Not as much as you did.” He shrugged carelessly, as if saying ‘yeah well we can’t do anything about this weather, can we?’ But to Rachel, it meant so much more than how he said it. It meant the world to her.
And she had to go and screw it all up.
“So I never got the chance to ask you… what happened with Jesse?”
This time she shrugged. “I have no clue. Last time I saw him was at prom. I guess he left.”
“Hmm.” Was all he said.
They were both silent for a while and then, slightly hesitating, she asked: “…Why did you and Quinn break up?”
He decided to be blunt. He basically already admitted he still loved her, so might as well. “Because of you.”
Her eyes widened in horror. “Oh my God! I didn’t - I never meant to -”
“Rachel, chill!” He almost laughed at her expression. He placed his hands on her shoulders and felt her stiffen underneath his touch. “I broke up with her for you.”
Tilting her head to the side in confusion, she waited for him to continue. Where was he going with this?
He let go of her shoulders, his eyes full of determination. “I wanna be together again, Rachel.” He shook his head. “I made a mistake from choosing Quinn over you and I honestly thought she had changed this year. I just… I guess I just need some closure.” When her eyebrows rose, he held his hands out: “No, God, I’m so stupid! What I mean is.. I was hurt.. and angry when you said you kissed Puck. The image of it just wouldn’t leave my head for weeks.”
She interrupted, crossing her arms. “You were hurt and angry with me because I kissed Puck?”
He nodded. “Yes.”
She pursed her lips. “Just like I was hurt and angry that you lied to me about sleeping with Santana?”
Well fuck. She had him there.
“Finn, I don’t mean to be rude, but you need to think things out here. You can’t just decide all of a sudden that you want to be with me again because you miss me -”
“I didn’t say I missed you,” He cut in.
Her cheeks flushed a dark red. “Well, I - I -”
“I did,” He nodded again, “I do.”
Gazing into each others eyes, she took a deep breath. Do not fall for this, damn it, she thought. “Look, Finn, I’d love to welcome you with open arms but…” Another deep breath. “I need you…. to need and want me when you need and want me. Not when Quinn or Santana or - or whoever isn’t available.” She uncrossed her arms. “I don’t want to jump into this.”
"Me neither!" He exclaimed then looked down at the floor, mumbling: "I just don’t want to not be with you anymore…"
She felt a piece of her heart break for this boy she loved so much, the rest of her heart soaring at the fact that he wanted her again.
“But I’m not giving up,” He raised his head back up, his eyes full of determination once more. “I will not stop until I have you again.”
And then he left her in the middle of the hallway.
Rachel Berry wouldn’t be alone anymore.
